Letter of appreciation sent from Bradley Stoke Town Council

BSTC - 2nd August 2021

Bradley Stoke Town Council sent a letter of appreciation to the English Football Team for fetching the runner-up trophy of the European National Cup and expressing its solidarity with the players who were subject to racial abuse through social media.

The letter was sent in pursuance to the submission at the Council meeting on the 14th of July by Cllr Tom Aditya, who is Chairman of the Bristol Multi-Faith Forum and Member of the Avon and Somerset Police Scrutiny Panel.

Cllr Tom Aditya, through his submission regarding community cohesion and social harmony, applauded the English National Team for their huge efforts, reaching the finals after a gap of 55 years, and added that the players brought hope and inspiration to millions on and off the pitch. He expressed his concerns that players who gave so much for our country have been subject to vile racist abuse on social media. Hatred has become endemic on social media platforms and it is clear that self-regulation isn’t working. He appealed the Parliament to enact tougher laws and requested the police to hold those miscreants liable. He also stated his wish for the Bradley Stoke Town Council to have a more robust action plan to bring more diversity and stand up according to the Council’s mission and vision and proposed to update the Council’s community engagement policy and other policies.

Town Mayor Cllr Michael Hill, Press Spokesperson Cllr Tom Aditya and Town Clerk Sharon Petela signed the letter (copy attached) on behalf of the councillors and council staff and sent it to the English National Team, as an expression of the community’s camaraderie.
