Good Neighbours Network

A good neighbours network is a small but structured group of volunteers who offer to do simple tasks for elderly neighbours or others in need. This might include things such as changing a light bulb, hanging a picture, offering some company, collecting prescriptions, giving someone a lift, help with filling in forms and much more. Good neighbours networks can foster a feeling of wellbeing not only for the residents who benefit from the help they receive, but also for the volunteers who gain a sense of purpose and a way of giving something back to the community.
South Gloucestershire Council are supporting people to set up networks in their area to help people to be involved and empowered in their own communities. Volunteers are encouraged to offer their services only for activities that they would feel happy and confident to carry out.
South Gloucestershire Council have produced a handbook which explains what a good neighbours network is, how it works and what needs to be done to make it a reality. It also gives useful information and sample documents to anyone developing a network in their area.
If you are thinking about setting up a good neighbours network in your area and would like some advice and support please contact South Gloucestershire Council.

South Glos is a community where we care and look after each other
But in a busy world, some people are lonely and living in unsafe or difficult conditions.
You can be a good neighbour and help someone who is struggling:
- Drop in for a cup of tea and a chat, or leave a note if they don’t seem comfortable with face-to-face conversations
- Ask if they would like help mowing the lawn or mending simple things at home
- Offer to pick up groceries or prescriptions
- Ask if they need a lift to a medical appointment or to one of our Community Welcome Spaces to meet other people
- Help them set up a video call with their family
- Brighten their day with some flowers or a tasty treat
If you have concerns about someone aged over 50, Age UK South Gloucestershire can help. Call 01454 411707.
