Travel update 23 May - 8 June 2026 - Severn Tunnel & South Gloucestershire upgrades
Network Rail - 15th May 2026
We're getting in touch to let you know about upcoming work in the Severn Tunnel and South Gloucestershire, impacting train services between Bristol Parkway and South Wales over a two-week period.
From Saturday 23 May to early hours of Tuesday 9 June, we'll be upgrading the overhead power equipment through the tunnel for improved reliability, performance and a longer lifespan.
We are also completing track and drainage work in the Patchway and Filton areas, as well as completing further construction work at the new Bristol Brabazon station on the former Filton Airfield.
For more information about the work taking place, see www.networkrail.co.uk/southgloucestershire
Travel arrangements: Saturday 23 May – Monday 8 June
During this time, replacement bus services will run between Bristol Parkway and Newport.
Some trains will run hourly between London Paddington and Swansea/Carmarthen by using an alternative route – stopping at Gloucester instead of Bristol Parkway. Trains will also run between London Paddington and Bristol Parkway at peak periods only – customers should travel via Bristol Temple Meads instead at off-peak times.
On Sunday 24 May, services won't be diverting via Gloucester and will therefore only run between London Paddington and Bristol Parkway, and between Newport and Swansea.
Please check before you travel and allow extra time for your journey. For more information please see www.nationalrail.co.uk or www.GWR.com/upgrade
