Bradley Stoke Town Council by Election Cancelled Due to the Impact of Coronavirus

South Gloucestershire Council - 19th March 2020

Following advice from Chole Smith (the Minister of State for the Cabinet Office) and the Electoral Commission I wish to inform you that the by - election set (for filling one casual vacancy on) the Bradley Stoke Town Council has been cancelled.

In her Ministerial Statement Minister Smith said:-

“Running a poll in the present times is likely to come with significant concerns about the wellbeing of those involved which may be unfair to both staff and the public. As such it would be reasonable and consistent with the national position to suspend any scheduled poll within this period [Coronavirus Emergency]… Ensuring the health and safety of the public is our number one priority in helping this effort. We appreciate all the hard work of Returning Officers and others during these difficult and challenging circumstances”.

I will keep the situation under review and I will be guided by the advice of the Minister and the Health Agencies. I can assure you that it remains my intention to balance the requirements of public health protection and local democracy. I will use my endeavours to run this poll as soon as it is practical and safe to do so.

John McCormack – Returning Officer, South Gloucestershire Council
