Railway upgrades and closures: Autumn/Winter 2018

Network Rail - 6th August 2018

This year we will finish electrification of the railway line from London Paddington to Bristol Parkway; and doubling the tracks between Bristol Temple Meads and Filton Abbey Wood stations.

Bristol Parkway Electrification

We are electrifying the railway from London Paddington, via Bristol Parkway, to Cardiff and down to Newbury.

This will enable GWR to introduce brand new Intercity Express Trains with 24% more seats and better on-board facilities.

DATES

  • 15 Sep - 7 Oct
  • 13 Oct - 14 Oct
  • 24 Dec - 1 Jan

During these dates we will be installing electrification equipment, including overhead power lines, from Winterbourne viaduct to Stoke Gifford, as well as testing equipment that has recently been installed.

No trains will call at, or run through, Bristol Parkway station during this period. Some trains will be diverted and other trains will be replaced by buses. Please check with GWR, CrossCountry or National Rail Enquiries before travelling.

Filton Bank Four Tracking

We are doubling the tracks from Filton Abbey Wood station to Bristol Temple Meads station, from two tracks to four. This will increase the reliability of journeys and enable more services to run from 2019.

DATES

  • 13 Oct - 14 Oct
  • 27 Oct - 19 Nov
  • 24 Nov - 25 Nov
  • 1 Dec - 2 Dec

During these dates all of the railway lines will be shut between Bristol Parkway and Bristol Temple Meads, including the Severn Beach Line. This is so that drainage and track work can be completed and signalling installed.

Christmas Upgrades 2018

There will be further work on the electrification of the main line between Bristol Parkway and South Wales.

DATES

  • 24 Dec - 1 Jan

Replacement coaches will run between Bristol Parkway and Newport, and long distance trains between London and South Wales will be diverted.
