South Gloucestershire Council Trading Standards - 9th December 2013

South Gloucestershire Council would like to advise residents to be wary of cold callers, whether they visit or telephone.

Trading Standards officers have been advised of a resident receiving telephone calls demanding money from someone claiming to be a trading standards officer.

The caller claimed that a tradesman the resident used previously had been detained and his assets seized. The caller claimed to be working with the courts and was the head of a Trading Standards department. He told the resident that he had to pay money, almost £10,000, in relation to the court case.

South Gloucestershire Council Trading Standards would like to reiterate to residents that Trading Standards officers will never request money from them. Even if a resident makes a complaint to Trading Standards which is investigated and pursued through the courts, there is no reason to request money from the victim.

If residents receive a call similar to that above, Trading Standards urges them to report it to South Gloucestershire Council or the Police immediately.

If there is a need to visit a resident or business, Trading Standards officers wear identity cards and will be happy to wait whilst their identities are confirmed with the Council. South Gloucestershire Councilís contact centre telephone number is 01454 868001. This contact telephone number can also be used to confirm the identity of any officer telephoning a resident or business.
