South Gloucestershire Council Trading Standards - 22nd October 2013

South Gloucestershire Council Trading Standards is asking residents to double check you are using the service you think you are on the internet.

Officers have seen an increase in the number of consumers mistakenly thinking they are using the appropriate websites to apply for driving licenses, passports and E111, for example, when in fact they are paying for a checking service.

Many new internet based companies have been set up which offer to check application forms and other paperwork for errors or omissions before it is submitted to the relevant Government department. There is nothing wrong with this approach, and for many it can save a lot of time having to resubmit applications especially if you are applying for something like a passport.

To avoid any confusion, Trading Standards would advise residents to visit the Government’s information website, www.gov.uk, if you are looking to apply for any nationally issued document, such as a passport or E111.

If you use a search engine, check the terms and conditions of the website before you submit any details. It is often difficult to claim a refund if you have made a mistake.

For further advice on this, or any other consumer matter, contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 08454 04 05 06.
