The Southern Brooks Community Partnership

Southern Brooks Community Partnership

The Southern Brooks Community Partnership (formerly known as The Community Development Project) was set-up over 12 years ago, as a partnership between the community associations in Patchway and Bradley Stoke, and Northavon Community Council. In 1999, the project became a registered charity and our core funding is through a service commission with South Gloucestershire Council and grant funding from both Patchway and Bradley Stoke Town Councils. The project has a management committee of Council Members and local people and we are always keen to hear from anyone who lives in the towns and would like to get involved. We are a membership organisation. Membership is free and open individual or group that takes place in the two towns, or associate membership is available to people working for the local authority or other statutory agencies.

International Day of Tolerance - Community Lunch

For several years the Southern Brooks Community Partnership has been working with Bradley Stoke Town Council to hold regular community meals.  We try to theme the events, to bring people together around a common interest.

There were significant concerns by those working in the community about increasing levels of racial abuse.  The Partnership against Racial Harassment was also concerned at increased levels of hate crimes in and around Patchway and Bradley Stoke.  Pauline Hawker-Bond, Head of Communities for South Gloucestershire Council, agreed to Chair the event to bring people together to begin to discuss how we can work together to improve the quality of life for people in this area. More Information About The Southern Brooks Community Partnership

So, what do we do? Community development is about working with local people to help them identify issues that concern them and to find local answers to local issues. Priorities for our work are supporting young people, young families, providing opportunities for people to work together through community arts projects and building up a strong community sector. The project offers hands on support. Often community development workers can only support a process – facilitate bringing together a group of people, provide a time limited support that helps people organise themselves. While the project believes firmly in people taking responsibility and in empowering people, we are also able to go one step further – to provide a management framework when needed that enables things to happen.

We currently have a staff team of two full-time workers and 30 sessional workers. The Co-ordinator for the project is Julie Snelling. Mo Bell is the Office Manager and ensures the smooth running of the administrative side of the project. Ruth Cornish is the Youth Development Worker for Bradley Stoke and manages a team of staff who deliver detached youth work in the town, run three nights a week youth work at Baileys Court Activity Centre, a young mums group, a youth forum and a regular football coaching session in partnership with Bristol Rovers and the Police.

The Southern Brooks Community Partnership have their own website, which can be viewed at the following URL:

Recent successes in Bradley Stoke include

We work with organisations such as Patchway & the Stokes Play Association and Freespace that provide activities for children and young people during the summer holidays. We also work with the local volunteer bureau, and Volunteer! South Gloucestershire to bring together people who want to volunteer with organisations that can use their skills. We are able to work with any community group that wants support around developing new skills, fund raising or advice on setting up a new organisation. People that are members of the project receive our quarterly newsletter that has a variety of information about what’s happening locally, new sources of funding and is a great way of groups sharing information.

So, if you’d like help in setting up a new group, or support for an existing group, why not give us a ring at the office on 01454 868570. We are happy to meet with people outside normal office hours.

Our members can also benefit from low cost office services, such as photocopying, laminating, comb-binding etc and we have several software packages such as Funder Finder that we can help you use to track down organisations that may fund your group.

Finally, if we don’t have the answers we normally know someone that does, we look forward to you contacting us.
