Town Council Confirms Youngest Mayor

BSTC - 18th May 2012

On Wednesday 16th May 2012, a 24 year old sports therapy graduate was confirmed as Britain's youngest female mayor when she was elected chair of Bradley Stoke Town Council.

Charlotte Walker, who graduated from the University of the West of England last year, has been a councillor in Bradley Stoke, the town she has lived in since she was 11, for just one year but was unanimously elected by her colleagues to chair council for the coming year.

In accepting the ceremonial chain of office Cllr Walker becomes the youngest mayor in the town's history and is believed to be the youngest female mayor currently in office in Britain. Speaking after her appointment she said: “I'm very excited to have this opportunity and am grateful to my fellow councillors for their support.” Adding: “I'm looking forward to the year ahead and meeting different groups of residents at a variety of events throughout the year.”

Before presiding over the election of Mayor, Cllr Ben Walker (Charlotte's older brother) ended his two consecutive terms of office as mayor with cheque presentations to his chosen charities: Three Brooks Nature Conservation Group and 1st Bradley Stoke Scout Group. Each charity received £4,245.60 and Cllr Ben Walker thanked the public for their generosity and said “It has been an honour and a privilege to serve as your mayor for the last two years”

Money for the Mayor's Charities is raised at the town's annual Community Festival in June, a Firework Display in November and other events throughout the year. Cllr Charlotte Walker announced that two charities, Alzheimer's Society Bradley Stoke Sports and Social Club, and the Have a Heart ChildLine Appeal will benefit from fundraising this year.

Immediately after taking office Cllr Charlotte Walker presided over the remaining business of the council's AGM in which Cllr Brian Hopkinson was elected as Vice-Chair of Council, committee memberships were confirmed and various procedural orders adopted.
