Bogus Trading Standards Officer

South Gloucestershire Council Trading Standards - 10th March 2015

South Gloucestershire Trading Standards would like to remind residents to remain vigilant when dealing with cold callers, whoever they claim to be.

Officers have recently received reports from across the country where residents and businesses have been visited by people claiming to be Trading Standards officers.

It is suspected the residents visited may have been victims of rogue traders in the past, with these rogues returning and claiming they are Trading Standards and can make a claim for compensation. However, they ask the resident for money to process this claim.

Businesses have also been the target of these bogus officials. Reports have been received that bogus Trading Standards officers have visited business premises asking for payments for inspections or alleged breaches of regulations.

Officers do carry out unannounced visits to both commercial and private addresses, but will always introduce themselves and show identification.

South Gloucestershire Council Trading Standards will never ask residents for money.

Officers will never ask businesses for cash for carrying out an inspection or for any alleged breach of legislation.

The public can verify the identity of any Council employee by contacting South Gloucestershire Councilís contact centre on 01454 868001.

Contact Trading Standards on 03454 04 05 06 or the Police on 101 if you have been contacted by someone claiming to be from Trading Standards and has asked for money.
