Be clear on cold callers

South Gloucestershire Council Trading Standards - 9th December 2013

South Gloucestershire Council Trading Standards would like to advise residents of a new tactic being used by rogue traders.

Officers have received reports of rogue traders offering to clean windows and cut grass for residents. That job is completed and paid for. However, the trader is then returning asking for more money for similar work they claim to have completed whilst the resident was not at home. This additional work was not agreed with the resident in advance and in some cases has not been done.

The visits demanding further payments are being made late at night. Officers believe this tactic is used to intimidate residents into paying money they do not owe.

Trading Standards would like to remind residents to be wary of using traders that cold call. Please remember to use your door chain and do not allow anyone you do not know, or are not expecting, into your home. If you do receive late night visits from traders demanding money for work not completed, please contact the Police immediately.

For advice on choosing a trader or for any consumer matter, please contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 08454 04 05 06, Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm.
